Taste Test Adventure: Sour Pickle vs. Hot Pickle Showdown
Happy new year everyone. It’s time once again to explore some unusual culinary experiences. This time my wife (Mellisa) and I are diving into the world of pickles – but these aren’t your ordinary pickles. Join me as we recount our adventure with Van Holten’s Sour and Hot pickles, each offering a unique twist on this classic snack.
The Sour Pickle Challenge
Our first test was trying out the sour pickle. Its massive size was daunting to say the least and Mellisa had high hopes for a tangy experience. However, the taste was unexpectedly overpowering. The very thick skin also made it quite difficult to enjoy. The intense sourness was true to its claim though, which is a bonus point. I gave it a reluctant two out of ten, whereas Mellisa only gave it a one out of ten.
The Spicy Pickle Experience
Next, we braced myself for the spicy or as it’s officially called, the hot pickle. Unlike the sour one, this had a more balanced flavour. The initial taste wasn’t significantly different, but according to Mellisa the subtle spice that followed was more enjoyable. I didn’t really taste the spice myself to be honest. It wasn’t as pungent as I expected, but, again according to Mellisa, it had a pleasant warmth that lingered. The ratings for the hot pickle: pretty much the same.
Reflections on the Taste Test
These pickle tastings weren’t exactly a joy. The sour pickle, while too intense for my palate, could appeal to those who relish a sharp tang, that super thick skin though, that’s something you just gotta like I guess. The spicy hot pickle, on the other hand, while better, still wasn’t great. It balanced the flavours better, offering just enough heat to to acknowledge its existence, but we wouldn’t ever buy this again for a casual eating experience.
Exploring Diverse Flavours
In the spirit of exploration, these tastings have reminded me that stepping out of our culinary comfort zones can lead to fascinating discoveries, both positive and negative. I hadn’t really eaten anything “new” ever since we got back from Japan, which has been a few months now. Whether it’s the unexpected spice of a pickle or the unfamiliar texture of an exotic fruit, there’s a world of flavours waiting to be explored and my health permitting, I want to do more of this again this year… locally at the very least.
Final Thoughts and Looking Forward
As we conclude this taste test adventure, I’m left with a renewed appreciation for the vast array of flavours that exist in the world. The sour pickle and the spicy hot pickle, whilst not exactly to our liking, have fuelled my appetite for more interesting tastebud experience again. As we move further into 2024, I encourage you to join me in exploring more unique and diverse flavours every so often.
