Upgrading Mistake: Receiving a 4080 Instead of a 4080 Super
If you’re not up to speed, please feel free to check out my previous post about my NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, 24GB (Gigabyte Gaming OC) dying and being upgraded to a 4080 Super for free.
I really hope this is the final update, but here goes. Instead of a 4080 Super, I initially received a standard 4080, even though the bill clearly stated 4080 Super. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super, 16GB (Gigabyte Gaming OC) should have arrived, and as soon as it did, I was supposed to send back my NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, 24GB (Gigabyte Gaming OC). That standard 4080 also didn’t come with a cable, by the way. So, I had to wait a few days for the cable to be delivered, only to find out what I got was a 4080 instead of a Super. Sure, they look different, but not to someone who didn’t care what either of them looked like in the first place. After mentioning it to them, they apologised, set up another exchange, and a few days later, I finally received my 4080 Super.
4080 Super or 4080, who cares?
Let’s be real for a second, I honestly didn’t care if it was a 4080 or a 4080 Super, as the differences between the two are not worth mentioning. However, as it stated ‘Super’ on the bill, if I were ever to have problems with that 4080 and wanted to send it back, yet they are expecting me to send back a 4080 Super because that’s what the ticket in their system has me down for, they’d probably claim I was trying to commit warranty fraud, and I would have to pay for a new GPU out of pocket.
I honestly believe they were genuine and didn’t try to trick me, but I can’t rule that out either, which is why I was quite adamant about getting this situation sorted. I would have been fine with just getting the bill changed, but that wasn’t an option, it seems. Just to be clear, though, I am not complaining, just explaining why I even bothered to get this exchanged again.
Other changes
I’ve also bought a Samsung 990 PRO NVMe M.2 and replaced both my RAM sticks, only one of which was faulty, but they sent me two new ones, so I exchanged both of them. What’s great about the 4080 Super, I don’t need to buy a new case. Since the Gigabyte version has the connector further inside, meaning the cable is not pressing against the glass whatsoever. So, with the fixed RAM, the 4080 Super installed without any space issues, and the extra M.2 drive, I hope I won’t have to open this thing up again until the 5090 and 15900K become a thing. Also, at that point, I might just need to buy new components altogether anyway.
So that is it I hope. No seriously, I really hope that’s it and I want have to deal with any of this anymore.
